Crofton Maryland Home Inspection

Brick house in Crofton marlyandCrofton, Maryland has a colorful history dating as far back as 1855. Located in Anne Arundel County, the town is approximately 15 miles away from Washington, D.C. Originally called "Anderson's Purchase" since it was owned by Edward Anderson, the area began to experience its first wave of growth in 1961 when a development corporation purchased 4,000 acres of land from farmer William Pointer. The development company then planned and sold new homes to create what would later become Crofton with its own post office within two years. Despite fires that damaged much of what had been built in 1965 and 1967, new construction kept rising as major retailers such as grocery stores began to move into the neighborhood by 1972. Today, anybody visiting or looking for real estate in Crofton can find modern homes and businesses situated conveniently alongside natural green areas which prove why this charming small town is still one of Maryland's most beloved places.

Crofton is a small town located in Anne Arundel County, about 26 miles from the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Originally known as 'Crofton Station,' the town was originally planned by George Howard and named in honor of his wife, Anne Arundel. Howard designed the town himself, and it was built between 1873 and 1875. The town was incorporated in 1877.

The town is located at the intersection of two highways. It's also home to a local grocery store, Post & Sons General Store, which is one of the few businesses remaining in the town. In addition to housing the store, the building also serves as a community meeting place for social events.

The town's architecture is typical of its time and region. Two brick churches remain from the 19th century. Both feature pointed arches and steeple designs typical of religious edifices of that time period. Several residential neighborhoods feature brick houses with detailed cornices and window treatments typical of the Victorian era. Many homes also feature wrought-iron railings and ornamental cast-iron fixtures.

Crofton's historic commercial district retains many of its nineteenth-century features as well. Similar to other small towns in America, retail space remains on both sides of the railroad tracks. However, several modern improvements have made it conducive for modern day retail needs as well. These include handicap parking spaces, curb cuts, modern pavement textures and bus stops with modern shelter structures.

The town's name is derived from the Scottish village of Crofton-on-Forth, which is where George Howard was born. Additionally, the local high school (Howard High School) is named after George Howard's wife as well: Anne Arundel Academy at Arundel Mills (formerly Arundel High School). This combination led many people to incorrectly assume that 'Arundel Mills' must have been inspired by a location - possibly London's renowned Ascot race track or England's Anne Arundel county.

Crofton is a charming town with an interesting past and unique architecture that continues to draw new residents today. Its name is derived from the Scottish village of Crofton-on-Forth and refers back to Sir Robert Walter's residence there in 1558. Crofton today remains an ideal place to raise a family while enjoying Maryland's natural beauty and proximity to Washington DC.
